Low Emission Cars Exempt from Ultra Low Emission Zones (ULEZ)

Low Emission Cars Exempt from Ultra Low Emission Zones (ULEZ)

The Ultra Low Emission Zone (ULEZ) is an area in London, England where an emissions standard based charge is applied to non-compliant vehicles. Check whether your vehicle is ULEZ compliant.

The ULEZ is a set area that is in operation 24/7 every day of the year, apart from Christmas Day. Any vehicles that do not meet the emissions standard have to pay a daily charge to drive within the zone.

The daily charge costs £12.50 per day. Failure to pay the ULEZ charge will result in a penalty charge of £180 – if paid within a fortnight this will be reduced to £90. More information on ULEZ penalty charges can be found on the Transport For London website.

If your vehicle doesn’t meet the ULEZ emissions standards and isn’t exempt, you need to pay a daily charge to drive within the zone. This applies to cars, motorcycles, vans, and specialist vehicles (up to and including 3.5 tonnes) and minibuses (up to and including 5 tonnes). The zone currently covers all areas within the North and South Circular Roads. The North Circular (A406) and South Circular (A205) roads are not in the zone.

The aim is to improve air quality by discouraging these heavily polluting vehicles to enter the zones, and instead encourage drivers to acquire compliant, and therefore greener, vehicles.

Owners of non-UK registered vehicles also need to meet the ULEZ emissions standards or pay the daily charge to drive within the zone. Vehicles need to be registered with our partner EPC plc, even if they meet the emissions standards.

The ULEZ is expanding from 29 August 2023 across all London boroughs.
